A sparkling gem set in Glenarm, one of the majestic nine Glens of Antrim is family run business Steensons Jewellers Économusée, with over 40 years’ experience in exceptional craftsmanship. Steensons Jewellers was established in 1976 by husband and wife team Bill and Christina Steenson after they graduated in Silversmithing from the University of Ulster. They brought an imaginative and fresh approach to jewellery in Ireland, putting their strong contemporary designs on show and to their delight found that visitors loved them.
Having enjoyed nearly forty years at the bench, Bill and Christina have handed over the reins to daughter Brona and son in law Dan Spencer. This young couple also met and graduated from the Art college and joined the family business as trainees in 2001. Their passion for strong design and enthusiasm for integrating new technologies with the traditional craft techniques sets them in good stead for carrying Steensons into the future.
Steensons Jewellers have grown a reputation in Ireland of which they are extremely proud; producing strong contemporary design. All the collections and rings by Steensons are designed and handcrafted in the Glenarm Économusée workshop situated along the famous Causeway Coastal Route.
Drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape, their contemporary designs are elegant, evocative and unique. The Steensons Économusée workshop is a world unseen, a rare opportunity to view highly skilled goldsmiths produce beautiful designs to the highest level of craftsmanship. Tools over 100 years sit alongside cutting technologies and are used to cut, shape and form precious metals before detailing with textured finishes and gemstones. Steensons currently have ten collections of jewellery as well as a number of one-off and special edition designs. They also offer a bespoke design service for a truly personal gift.
During your visit to the Économusée workshop you can watch the highly skilled craftspeople at work, learn about the family business, the craft and browse over the various designs in the gallery.
More recently Steensons have had the opportunity to create crowns, brooches and pendants for the American fantasy drama television series Game of Thrones, a series filmed extensively in Northern Ireland. The Steensons were granted the licence for a collection based on the show allowing visitors to purchase from the collection.
Steensons was launched as the fourth Économusée in the United Kingdom on 5th December 2013.
