Nestled among the yellow fields of rapeseed oil in Binevenagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the outskirts of Limavady you will find Broglasco Farm, home of the Award Winning Broighter Gold Rapeseed Oil Économusée. Behind every bottle of this local product is a wealth of history. Grown on the field where the Broighter Hoard, described as the “greatest gold hoard in Ireland,” was discovered in 1896.
Broighter Gold Rapeseed oil, owned by Richard and Leona Kane, was discovered by accident one evening in 2006 whilst Leona was preparing the dinner and had run out of olive oil. Richard suggested using some of the unfiltered cold pressed rapeseed oil. It was the smell and taste that caught Leona’s attention. The Kane Family have been farming in Myroe for over 100 years, and Richard (6th Generation) now works the land with the latest machinery whilst still using traditional methods. They have been a member of the Économusée network since 2012.
Broighter Gold Économusée continuously work to develop their range of premium oils. The range now consists of the original Pure award winning rapeseed oil, their own infused range of rapeseed oils; Garlic, Rosemary & Garlic, Basil, Chilli, Lemon, Thai, Black Truffle and Black Truffle & Wild Porcini Mushroom. These infused oils have won numerous Awards and Accolades from leading chefs in the industry. Those who have used and tasted Broighter Gold Rapeseed Oils include Noel McMeel, Lough Erne Resort where it was used for the G8 Summit, The Titanic Building Belfast where it was used as part of a Royal Visit, Irish President Michael D. Higgins, President of the United States Barack Obama and Chefs James Martin, Simon Rimmer and Rachel Allen.
In recognition of Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink in 2016 and to celebrate their birthday Broighter Gold Économusée launched a Special Edition Liquid Gold containing 23- carat gold flakes. The oils aromatic and golden properties are captivating — a true taste of luxury…once you experience their Special Edition Liquid Gold you will feel the sense of opulence.
