Storsjöhyttan was founded in the Autumn of 1995, the first studio glassworks in the county of Jämtland. It is owned and run by three women bold enough to put their passionate feel for the craft to practical use in a part of Sweden without any glassmaking tradition!
In the course of these years they have succeeded in building up a reliable market for their confidently designed glassware. Nilla, Ulla and Anna Lena met at the Orrefors School of Glassmaking. It was there that they conceived the idea of a glassworks of their own. They moved into the electricity authority`s former premises beside the yacht marina where they built a fully equipped modern glassworks from scratch. Today this handsome old building houses not only a workshop but also a sales area/gallery.
Storsjöhyttan is located in Östersund which is the only city in the beautiful county of Jämtland. Jämtland is most often associated with its beautiful nature - its wilderness with great lakes and high mountains. Skiing, fishing and hiking are popular events in the area.
Jämtland is also famous for its local food entrepreneurs both in the national and international market.Storsjöhyttan is located in the harbour, a five minute walk from the centre with a lot of small boutiques, restaurants and hotels. The building that houses the glassworks stands just a few meters from the railway that takes you to Åre, Storlien and finally reaches Trondheim and the west coast of Norway. In the summer the harbour of Östersund is a centre of culture with different kinds of festivals and events. It is a popular walkway all year around and in the wintertime the ice on the lake is used for skating, skiing and dog-sleighing. Storsjöhyttan is right in the middle of it all!
